Twilight of the Gods
The Norse regularly trade with and raid inhabitants of the Baltic states (what would become Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). Unlike the Rus, most of the Baltic peoples are not directly related to the Norse. Unlike Scandinavia, there is no significant effort to spread the cult of the White Christ in these regions – they are firmly ‘pagan’.
Lithuania is the largest political identity – the core of what will eventually become the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania, Rus and Samogitia – but there is no unified sense of culture or place as of yet. These Baltic peoples provide the Norse with their main connection to the east and south – the wild lands of small, fierce, dark people who drink sand and live in homes made of silk.
